The #1-seeded Stone Memorial Lady Panthers (26-3, 7-1) wrapped up the District 7-3A tournament championship on Monday as they defeated #3 Upperman, 60-51.
Freshman Lexi Clark and senior Ashley Whittenburg led the Lady Panthers with 18 points each. Clark was named tournament MVP along with Whittenburg, Lauren Clark and Ella Jane May making the all-tournament team. Maggie Butler led Upperman with 18 points followed by 12 from Taylor Dolente.
Stone Memorial jumped out to a 19-9 lead after one quarter and held a 38-20 lead at halftime. Upperman trimmed their deficit to 11 points (50-39) by the end of the fourth quarter.
The Lady Bees weren’t done there as three consecutive baskets from Dolente cut Upperman’s deficit to four points (52-48) with 3:07 remaining, but Stone Memorial held them off from there at the free-throw line to win by a 60-51 margin.
Both teams begin Region 4-3A tournament quarterfinal action on Friday as 7-3A #1 seed Stone Memorial hosts District 8-3A #4 seed Central Magnet while #2 Upperman hosts #3 Macon County. District 8-3A champion Watertown will host #4 Livingston while #3 White County will travel to #2 DeKalb County.
