Smith County Boys Defeat Cannon County 62-58 For First District Championship Since 1990; Cooper Williams Named Tournament MVP

The Smith County Owls (19-11) hoisted their first district tournament championship plaque since 1990 on Tuesday as they defeated Cannon County in the District 6-2A championship, 62-58.

Owl guard Cooper Williams was named tournament MVP alongside all-tournament selections Morgan Sinclair, Lucas Cornwell, Tyler Jones and Cohen Rigsby.

Williams dropped 30 points in Tuesday’s championship game including a perfect 18-18 from the free-throw line. He went 12-12 in the fourth quarter alone to seal the victory.

The Owls split their regular season matchups with the Lions before wining the rubber match on Tuesday in Monterey in the district championship game.

Smith County opens Region 3-2A tournament play at home on Saturday in the quarterfinal round against District 5-2A’s #4 seed Marion County at 7 p.m.
