PCSO Responds to an Attempted Carjacking and Search

August 25, 2020: UPDATED REPORT: ADDITIONAL ATTEMPTED CARJACKING CHARGES

PUTNAM COUNTY, TN (August 24, 2020): Continuing the investigation of the incident at the Corner Market Shell station in Silver Point, TN, on Sunday, Putnam County Sheriff’s Investigators obtained information Monday morning leading to additional charges of carjacking for both Thomas Johnson and Tommy Lee Smith, adding an additional $25,000 bond for each.

First Report on:

ATTEMPTED CARJACKING AND SEARCH

PUTNAM COUNTY, TN (August 23, 2020): At approximately 4PM, the Putnam County
Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) received a call of an attempted carjacking at the Corner Market Shell station in Silver Point, TN, at exit 273 of Interstate 40.

Upon arrival, Thomas Johnson, 20 years of age, of Madison County, TN was immediately taken into custody. Tommie Lee Smith, 22 years old, also of Madison County, TN fled but was later apprehended nearby after an extensive K-9 and helicopter search by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.

The two arrived at the Corner Market at approximately 11:30AM with car trouble. They were traveling in a 2002 Honda Civic which had been reported stolen from Jackson, TN earlier in the day. Smith forced his way into a car, the owner of the car struggled with Smith. Smith then attempted to hit the owner of the vehicle, resulting in that vehicle crashing at the scene and Smith fleeing on foot.

Thomas Johnson was arrested for two counts of theft of property and has a $14,000 bond. Tommy Lee Smith was arrested for two counts of theft of property, aggravated assault, evading arrest, and shoplifting. His bond is $31,000. Smith also has an outstanding warrant for a violation in Madison County, TN.
