Several Upper Cumberland football teams finished their preseason preparation when they played in a jamboree at Gordonsville on Friday night.
Four matchups; Smith County vs Watertown, Clay County vs DeKalb County, DCA vs Goodpasture and Cannon County vs Gordonsville headlined the final preseason scrimmages of the year.
Each scrimmage consisted of two quarters with the varsity squads facing off in the first quarter followed by JV.
The Smith County Owls opened the night with an 18-6 victory over Watertown. In the varsity quarter, Kaiden Mason carried the ball several times and Jaeden Evans capped off a 7:27 drive with a touchdown to make it 6-0. Jermaine Cason ended the frame with a 100-yard pick-six after jumping a pass in the end zone.
The DeKalb County Tigers topped Clay County 20-7. The Tigers struck early on a one-yard touchdown rush after a 69-yard catch and run by Jon Hendrix. Clay County answered on a touchdown pass by Nate Adams, who also caught an interception, to tie the game at 7 at the end of the varsity quarter. The Tigers’ JV added two rushing touchdowns to make it 20-7 in the second quarter.
Gordonsviille wrapped up the night with a 14-0 win over Cannon County. Tailback Bryson Gresham broke through for a long touchdown rush on fourth down to give the Tigers a 7-0 lead. The JV added another score to take the scrimmage.
Smith County and Gordonsville will open the regular season in the UCR High School Football Game of the Week on Friday. Clay County will host York. DeKalb County will face off against rival Warren County.
