York Institute Sweeps In-School Volleyball Match Against Clarkrange

By Michael Lindsay

District 7A volleyball foes Clarkrange and York Institute faced off Thursday afternoon for an in-school game in Jamestown with the homestanding Dragonettes earning a 3-0 sweep of the Lady Buffaloes.

“We thought it was good for the communities and student bodies,” said York head coach Shane Monday. “That really helped both of us as we keep going this season. Our girls really fed off the energy and played hard.”

York took the first set 25-21 before running away with a 25-14 victory in the second. The Dragonettes capped off the sweep with a 25-21 win in the third set.

“Clarkrange hits hard, so we couldn’t let free balls go through,” said Monday.

Thursday’s match follows a school-record 28-kill performance by senior Callie Franklin in their Tuesday contest against Van Buren County.

“Callie does what she does out there,” said Monday. “All of the girls are stepping up and doing what they’re supposed to do; Ashton Napier really stepped up in her second year playing.”

York Institute improves to 3-0 overall. Up next for both programs is the Plateau Invitational tournament all day Saturday at Cumberland County High School.

“We’re scheduling a lot of 2A schools to make us better for our district,” said Monday. “We’re still figuring out some defense, but we’ll get it figured out. We’ve got to be ready to go.”
