The Upperman Lady Bees fell in their Class 2A state volleyball tournament opener Tuesday evening as they were beat in straight sets by defending Class 2A runner-up Dyer County, 3-0.
“Dyer County is a really good program,” said Upperman head coach Tori Permenter. “They’ve been here 5 years in a row. We saw experience versus inexperience, and that’s okay. We’ll get experience and we want to get back.”
Dyer County took the first set 25-15 followed by a 25-21 win in the second set before closing out the victory with a 25-19 victory in the third set.
“I thought nerves got us a little bit in the first set,” said Permenter. “We settled down a little bit in the second and third set; there were a couple of balls and runs that didn’t go our way. We were swinging (in the second and third set), but it felt like we were always behind.”
The Lady Bees aren’t done in Murfreesboro, however, as they’ll now compete in the newly-formed consolation bracket for a shot at third place if they win out. Upperman is scheduled to face Chuckey-Doak on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Rockvale High School.
“We didn’t get our goal of a state championship, but now it’s on to our next goal of a top-3 finish,” said Permenter. “No matter what, our season was going to end this week so we’re going to enjoy every moment and enjoy playing together.”
