5-PEAT: York Dragonettes Defeat Smith County For Fifth Consecutive District Championship, 44-40; Raylee Werner Named Tournament MVP

The York Institute Dragonettes (24-6, 6-0) added their fifth consecutive district championship plaque to the trophy case on Monday as they defeated Smith County (19-11, 4-2) in the 6-2A title game, 44-40.

Emma Pile led the way with 15 points followed by Raylee Werner with 12 points and 6 rebounds. Emma Cooper tacked on 8 boards and 5 assists in the win.

Werner was named tournament MVP along with Cooper, Franklin, Pile and Josie Ashburn making the all-tournament team.

York’s senior class completed a clean sweep of regular season and district tournament games over their careers with the win. The Dragonettes advance to the Region 4-1A tournament quarterfinals on Friday at home against #4 seed Marion County.
