Kat Johnson Goes 4-4 With A Home Run To Lead Gordonsville In 7-2 Win At DeKalb County

By Michael Lindsay

The Gordonsville Tigerettes won their seventh consecutive game on Friday as they traveled to Smithville and defeated DeKalb County, 7-2.

“That’s the first game in a long time that we’ve really barreled up the ball several times,” said Gordonsville head coach Jonathan Bush. “We had 6 or 7 good barrels, and anytime you can get one running an inning, I’ll take it.”

Gordonsville tallied 12 hits including a 4-4 performance by sophomore Kat Johnson. The shortstop hit a solo home run, 2 doubles, scored 3 runs and drove in 2 runs in the win.

Gordonsville pitcher Callie Dillard struck out 9 batters while surrendering 1 walk and 4 hits in 6 and 1/3 innings for the win.

Gordonsville scored at least one run in each of the first 6 innings. Johnson kicked off the scoring with a solo home run in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Tigerettes took advantage of a DeKalb County error in the top of the second to score two runs to lead 3-0 after two.

The Tigerettes scored one run in the tops of the third through sixth innings to lead 6-0 entering the bottom-half of the frame. DeKalb County shortstop Rylee Wilbur got her team on the board in the bottom of the sixth as she delivered a two-run home run over the right field fence to cut Gordonsville’s lead to 7-2.

DeKalb County threatened with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, but Gordonsville relief pitcher Carlie Maynard shut the door on the comeback effort with a strikeout to preserve her team’s 7-2 victory.

Up next for Gordonsville is a trip to Riverdale on Monday and a home matchup with Smith County on Tuesday to close out the regular season.

“Riverdale’s a big game that we circled,” said Bush. “Then we play Smith County on Tuesday. We always want to play the best opponents we can. We’re trying to put the best competition in front of my girls to get us ready for the postseason.”
