The #1-seeded Cookeville Cavaliers opened District 6-4A tournament play with a win on Friday as senior Landen Severance pitched a complete-game shutout in his team’s 4-0 win over Coffee County.
Severance struck out 8 batters with 0 walks and 5 hits on 90 pitches, 66 of which were for strikes.
“It’ll be a long time before I coach a pitcher better than Severance,” said Cookeville head coach Derek Bush. “That guy is unreal; it was a masterclass tonight.”
Cookeville struck first in the bottom of the third inning as a Coffee County error scored Cole Teeters to give the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead after three.
The Cavaliers extended their advantage in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of RBI singles from Teeters and KJ Anderson to take a 3-0 advantage into the sixth inning, where they tacked on one more run via an Easton Davidson grounder to make the final score 4-0.
“The last three innings, we played situational baseball,” said Bush. “We got them on, got them over and got them in. Those were some big RBI shots with guys in scoring position by Cole Teeters and KJ Anderson.”
Cookeville is back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Coffee County, where a win would clinch a berth in the District 6-4A championship and Region 3-4A tournament semifinals.
