Upperman Class of 2027 tight end Colton Johnson took the next step in his football career  as he announced his commitment to play at University of Mississippi Thursday in an interview with UCR.

Johnson, who is also a linebacker for the Bees, committed to the Rebels after a lengthy recruiting process which saw him earn over 50 Division 1 offers.

“I’m going to play at Ole Miss,” Johnson told UCR on Thursday.

Johnson is ranked the number 9 class of 2027 Y-TE in the nation according to ESPN, and is a 3-star athlete in the 247 Sports Composite Rankings.

He said his decision came down to Ole Miss being a great fit.

“I love the coaches,” said Johnson. “Their mentality and what they see in me. I love the offense and how it’s set up for me and the (tight end) room and with how it’s set up I think I’m going to go in and have a good chance to compete for a spot early.”

Johnson has helped lead the Bees to 34 wins and a state championship game appearance in his three seasons in Baxter, and is poised for another strong campaign as a senior two-way starter.

The Rebels are led by first-year head coach Pete Golding. They reached the semifinals of the College Football Playoff in the 2026 season.

Johnson and the Bees will open their season at home when they take on Knoxville Webb on August 21.
