Week Four (Friday, Sept. 11)

Week four’s guest picker is Turf Masters owner and fan of all things Tennessee, Matt Wilson. Catch him on the sidelines at Upperman home football games running one of the finest chain gangs in the state most weeks, but this week he decided to go to Panama City Beach instead.

UCR GOTW Presented by Mayberry’s Furniture: Stone Memorial (2-1) at Upperman (2-1)

Noah: Upperman 28-21

Really fun matchup in this week’s GOTW. Contrasting styles go at it which always creates interesting football games. Stone is looking to be the first region opponent to ever beat the Bees in Baxter in the regular season, but that is a very tough task. Upperman’s run game has been elite through three games, and I will lean towards the home team that has consistently won big region games under Adam Caine. 

Jacob: Stone Memorial 21-14

I know I know, Upperman hasn’t lost a game under coach Caine in region play since Stone beat them four seasons ago. However, I have a gut feeling. Stone’s offense is set up to challenge the back end of this Upperman defense. If Stone can get enough resistance against the Upperman rush (which is very obviously easier said than done) then I like the Panthers in a big time win. 

Goose: Stone Memorial 21-14

This one’s the game of the year for a reason and should be a thriller as two contrasting styles clash in Baxter. Stone Memorial has to find a way up front to stuff the Bees’ potent rushing attack, but ultimately the Panthers have a little more on the perimeter and get it done in a thriller.

Matt: Upperman 27-13

Upperman physicality will be something to watch in this game. Their running game and the ability to control the clock will be too much for Stone. #23 Johnson for UHS will be a difference maker tonight!

Justin: Upperman 22-21

 

UCR2: Livingston Academy (3-0) at York Institute (0-3) 

Noah: Livingston 28-21

Livingston has found ways to win football games while York has faced an absolute gauntlet. This should be a great matchup, but I’ll take the 4A Wildcats to get it done on the road with another big second half performance.

Jacob: York Institute 22-21

Another gut feeling pick that could come back to bite me (sorry to my friends in Livingston). This York team has played such a tough schedule to start the season and it continues this week against LA. I think this could be the breakthrough game for the Dragons at home against a really solid LA team. 

Goose: Livingston 20-13

York is better than their record indicates, and this game will be a challenge for Livingston. The Wildcats will need to win in the trenches against a physical York team to improve to 4-0. In

Matt: Livingston 28-14

Livingston’s ability to run the football behind the offensive line has been noticeable in the first three games. #79 Ogletree has been a road grader this season!

Justin: Livingston 22-18

 

UCR3: Macon County (3-0) at Trousdale County (1-2)

Noah: Macon County 42-0

Tigers name the score in this good ole fashioned rivalry game. Two teams in different spots.

Jacob: Macon County 42-0

The Tigers are big favorites in this one as they have been in most games this season and they have played well in games they have been favored. I like Macon County to continue playing well early this season. 

Goose: Macon County 49-7

Macon County enters as a big favorite and should handle business against an old rival. The Tigers have been rolling to start the season and have a ton of momentum entering this one.

Matt: Macon County 35-13

Give me Macon County here. Well coached football team. They will be well prepared for this matchup.

Justin: Macon County 37-7

 

UCR4: White County (3-0) at Tullahoma (1-2) 

Noah: White County 35-7

The Warriors have an opportunity to rediscover their explosiveness in the run game as they improve to 4-0 before region play begins.

Jacob: White County 35-14

Sorry Goose, I’m copying your score. Tullahoma lost a lot from their offense last season who struggled to score against this White County defense a year ago. The Warriors are rolling right now and I think that continues on the road tonight. 

Goose: White County 35-13

Hey Jacob, I changed my score since you tried to copy it. White County made a statement in last year’s win against a ranked Class 5A Tullahoma team. The Warriors enter this year as the favorite and should handle business on the road.

Matt: White County 42-7

White county has been a very physical football team so far. They have shown the ability to versatile on offense. Coach Foster is doing a great job with that program. #3 Pinion is the leader on that offense. He manages the game perfectly.

Justin: White County 41-14

 

UCR Midstate GOTW: Cookeville (1-2) at Gallatin (3-0)

Noah: Gallatin 24-21

This is a massive game for the Cavaliers. This game comes down to two things, field position and can Cookeville get the passing game working? Ultimately I think Gallatin’s kicker is the difference as they get a big region win. 

Jacob: Gallatin 21-14

This has been a really fun game the last handful of years and tonight should be much of the same. This is a pick where I hope I’m wrong and the Cavaliers get the ball rolling, but this Gallatin team is 3-0 against three solid teams and it’s not going to be easy tonight. 

Goose: Gallatin 35-28

Cookeville opens Region 4-6A play on the road against a formidable Gallatin team. This one is the midstate game of the week for a reason and should be a great game.

Matt: Cookeville 21-20

Cookeville on the road for the second time this year. As long as they get the ball in their playmaker hands they should be ok. Gallatin can score. I enjoy watching number #23 Jones on defense. He is always around the ball.
