Putnam County Summer Reading Programs

PCSS Summer Reading Programs

All four library branches have ongoing literacy related summer activities, and a weekly activity culminating in children receiving free books. In addition, teachers and parents from Cane Creek Elementary, Jere Whitson Elementary, Algood Elementary, Northeast Elementary, and Capshaw Elementary are all providing weekly literacy activities in densely populated neighborhoods serving their schools with reading demonstrations and giving away books. During the summer months when children are not in school, their reading levels may decline as much as three months. This phenomenon is called the “Summer Slide”, and we’re on a mission to eliminate it! Books may be from various sources, and those provided through the National Children’s Reading Foundation are given to children to keep. Good readers are first “grown” in the laps of parents, from the ages of birth to five years old. Contact the library in your community for literacy related summer activity schedules.
