Big Band Sound to liven up Dogwood Park Aug. 6 and Sept. 3
COOKEVILLE – Get ready for saxophones, trumpets, trombones, a piano and more – plus lots of lively dancing.
It’ll happen Monday during a free Big Band Sound Orchestra concert at 7:30 p.m. at Dogwood Park, 30 E. Broad St. Another is scheduled for Sept. 3.
“Big Band Sound is very popular with audiences and dancers,” Chad McDonald, Cookeville Leisure Services cultural arts superintendent, said. “The band plays swing and jazz (from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s) and reserves half the stage as a dance floor. Several couples continually dance while the seated audience enjoys the great music.”
Band members include professional musicians, both active and retired, as well as other community members. Many of them are also part of the Cookeville Community Band, which performed numerous free concerts this summer at Dogwood Park.
Led by trombonist Carroll Gotcher, Big Band Sound was founded in 1994 by the late OJ Cummins and was run several years by the late Wayne Pegram.
“Look forward to swing, jazz, Latin and pop selections for listening and dancing enjoyment,” band members said.
Attendees may bring lawn chairs and blankets or take advantage of the tiered permanent seating. Concessions are available.
