News & Events for Cordell Hull Birthplace State Historic Park

We’ve got so many interesting programs coming up here at Cordell Hull Birthplace State Historic Park, including traditional crafts, food programs and family-friendly fun. We’re especially excited to be working with the Tennessee Arts Commission to bring a broom making workshop with Susan and Skip Peek. Susan and Skip are the master broom and sock makers who have been selling and demonstrating their crafts at Cordell Hull Day the past few years.  Please join us at the park on Saturday, January 12th at 10am. You’ll learn this traditional art and make a small broom to take home. Workshop costs is $25 and covers instruction and materials. Participants should be over the age of 12.

Other Upcoming Events:

Tuesday, January 1st 1pm: First Hike 2019

This moderate 2-mile hike will traverse the Bunkum Loop trail. Along the way, we’ll talk a bit about winter tree identification methods & investigate examples. Bring sturdy shoes, dress for the weather, and bring a bottle of water. Even though it’s chilly outside, adequate hydration is still very important, so make sure to drink extra water starting a few days before our hike.

Friday, January 4th 10am: Appalachian Test Kitchen: Cider Soup Beans & Hoe Cakes

This week for our open hearth cooking series, we’ll be making cider soup beans with a delicious hoe cake! If you’d like to participate and/or observe the cooking, join us at 10am when we’ll get set up and start the fire. If you’d just like to join us for a lunch at the park, stop by around noon and we’ll get you fed! $2 Kids Under 12/$5 Adults. Reserve your spot so we know how much to make!

Saturday, January 5th 1pm: Case Studies with Detective Ralph Mayercik

Back in October we had a last-minute speaker cancellation and Detective Ralph Mayercik stepped in with very little notice and provided an incredible learning experience for all who attended. We’re happy to welcome him back, by popular demand, as our January speaker!

Following a similar format, Detective Mayercik will present real-world cases, providing us with an in-depth insider’s view on the process of murder investigation. If you’ve ever wondered if you’ve got the mind for detective work, this will be an opportunity to learn about the level of thinking that solves cases.

Due to the graphic and serious nature of this subject and the imagery, this program is not suitable for children. Parents should use caution when deciding whether to bring teenagers.

Saturday, January 5th 3:30pm: Finger Weaving

Weave your way into a good time by joining Interpretive Ranger Rachel to learn to weave using no tools, only your fingers. We will make headbands and bracelets that we will be able to take home! We will meet at the park office.

Friday, January 11th: Appalachian Test Kitchen: Spoon Bread, Country Ham & Greens

Spoon bread is a traditional dish that’s something like a cross between cornbread, pudding and a quiche. It’s tasty and fun to make.
