Longtime Jackson County high school boys basketball coach Kevin Thomas announced his retirement Thursday afternoon via press release from the school, with BJ Upchurch taking over the program.
Thomas’ retirement comes after the Blue Devils won the Class 1A state championship in March with a 32-5 overall record.

After many years of dedicated service, Coach Kevin Thomas has decided to retire from coaching Boys Basketball at Jackson County High School.
Coach Thomas has made a tremendous impact on our students, athletes, and school community throughout his coaching career. We are incredibly grateful for the time, dedication, leadership, and positive influence he has given to our Blue Devils. Coach Thomas, thank you for everything you have done for JCHS. We are forever grateful for you!
Today, we were excited to officially name BJ Upchurch as the next Head Boys Basketball Coach at JCHS.
Coach Upchurch has been an assistant coach at JCHS for the past 11 years, with 10 of those years spent working alongside Coach Thomas. He brings tremendous experience, dedication, and a deep understanding of our basketball program and our students.
As one chapter comes to a close, another begins.
We want to thank Coach Thomas for building a strong foundation and congratulate Coach Upchurch as he takes the baton and leads our Blue Devils into the future.
