Police: Algood Woman Attempts To Eat Controlled Substance While Being Booked Into Jail

COOKEVILLE, TN — Officers say they arrested a woman after she was found incapacitated behind the wheel of a vehicle in the parking of a Walmart. Children were said to be inside car.

On February 16th, Sonya Allen, 27, was found by Cookeville Police in a vehicle in the parking lot of a Walmart. The vehicle was running and Allen was allegedly slumped behind the wheel. When Allen was roused she exhibited slurred speech and had difficulty following directions, according to police. Field sobriety tests were given and Allen is accused of failing to successfully complete the tests.

Two children, a 2-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy, were reportedly in the back of the vehicle.

Allen was transported to the Putnam County Jail and was taken into booking. While undergoing booking procedures, Allen allegedly pulled a bottle from her person and attempted to eat the contents. Upon inspection, the bottle consisted of 16 Alprazolam tables and 1 Subutex pill, according to police.

Alprazolam is a sedative that used to treat anxiety and panic disorders. Subutex is a narcotic that can be used to treat pain. Both of these are controlled substances.

Allen was charged with Simple Possession/Casual Exchange, Introduction of Contraband Into a Penal Institution, Tampering/Fabricating Evidence, Reckless Endangerment and D.U.I. Her total bond is set at $18,000.
