COOKEVILLE – Summer is a time for having fun and making new friends. Cookeville Leisure Services offers an opportunity for both through several sports-related day camps.
Registration is open for Basketball Camp, Lacrosse Camp and All Sports Camp, all of which will be held at Cane Creek Gymnasium and fields at 180 C C Camp Road near Cane Creek Park.
“Campers will have an opportunity to try out new sports,” Jim Crea, Leisure Services athletic superintendent, said. “It’ll be a learning experience.”
Other benefits of camp, staff members noted, are that they offer kids a chance to unplug from electronics, be physically active and feel a sense of community and support for the sports and activities that are important to them.
Basketball Camp
This camp, a partnership between Leisure Services and 1Shot Athletics, is being offered June 3-7, June 24-28 and July 15-19 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at Cane Creek Gymnasium. Campers ages 7-15 will engage in various drills and shooting techniques with Coach Jermaine McElvain. The cost is $80 per week if registered by the Friday before camp or $20 per day drop-in. Lacrosse Camp
Want to learn more about lacrosse? This camp, to be held June 10-14 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Cane Creek Gymnasium and fields, is for children ages 7-12. Campers will work with gymnasium staff and area coaches to learn to play or improve skills in this fast-paced team sport in which players use a lacrosse stick to carry, pass, catch and shoot a lacrosse ball into the goal. Equipment is provided. The cost is $80. Lunch and an afternoon snack will be provided by the Putnam County School Nutrition Program. To register, call 931-526-9767.
All Sports Camp
This camp has it all – basketball, volleyball, soccer, baseball, football, golf, lacrosse, pickleball, disc golf and a variety of gymnasium games. It will be held June 17-21, July 8-12 and July 22-26 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Cane Creek Gymnasium and fields. It’s the ultimate camp for children ages 7-12 who want to improve in the sports they play as well as build knowledge and ability in sports they are unfamiliar with. Gymnasium staff and area coaches will go over the fundamentals of each sport. The cost is $80 per week. Lunch and an afternoon snack will be provided by the Putnam County School Nutrition Program.
