Free demonstrations

If you’re unfamiliar with our wellness classes, you’re in for a treat Aug. 3 during Wellness Day at Cane Creek Recreation Center, 180 C C Camp Road. Free demonstrations include Tai Chi and Qigong, 10-11:15 a.m.; Belly Dance (beginning and intermediate), 11:15 a.m.-noon; Yoga Nindra Meditation/Relaxation,12:15-1:15 p.m.; and Drumming Circle, 2:30-4 p.m. Just drop in – no registration required. Community Day

Pokemon Go Community Day is Aug. 3 from 4-7 p.m., and Dogwood Park’s concession stand will be open for the occasion at 30 E. Broad St. Stop by and enjoy the park along with fellow players as you try to capture Ralts.

Lively evening

Enjoy a Big Band Sound Orchestra concert in the beautiful setting of Dogwood Park, 30 E. Broad St., Aug. 5 and Sept. 2 at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free, and concessions are available. Dancing is encouraged.

Meditation in motion

Registration is open for two six-week Tai Chi classes: Tuesdays, Aug. 6-Sept. 10, 5:30-6:30 p.m., and Thursdays, Aug. 15-Sept. 19, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Tai Chi promotes serenity through gentle, low-impact movements. All experience levels are welcome to join award-winning martial artist Nikki Desch at Cane Creek Recreation Center, 180 C C Camp Road. Cost is $30 per six-week session. Selfies on the Square

Our Aug. 10 History Hike will highlight Cookeville’s historic Courthouse Square. Beginning at the Cookeville History Museum, you’ll grab an entry form and sweet treats and head out to learn some interesting facts. Take your cell phone or camera along so you can snap some “selfies” when you find the mystery locations on the Square. Then return to the history museum and show us your photos to be entered in a prize drawing. To learn more, call 520-5455.

Express yourself

Journal writing is not just for professional writers. It can be a useful tool in everyone’s life. Discover your focus and priorities with instructor Janet Biery in How to Journal workshops on Saturdays, Aug. 10, 24, Sept. 14, 28 and Oct. 12, 26 from 10-11:15 a.m. at Cane Creek Recreation Center, 180 C C Camp Road. Biery, retired science and math teacher who loves to write, has been president of Cookeville Creative Writers’ Association for nearly 40 years. Cost is $20. To learn more, call 526-7393.

Capture special events

If you are a video guru or just like to get your camera out for special events, Special Events Video Techniques is the workshop for you. It will be held on Tuesdays, Aug. 13, 20 and 27, from 5:30-7 p.m. at Cane Creek Recreation Center, 180 C C Camp Road. Participants will learn to make videos at weddings, sporting events, family reunions and more. Bring a smartphone or DSLR camera if possible. Cost is $40. For more information, call 526-7393.

Heart and Soul

Our final Third Thursday in the Park concert of the season will be Aug. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at Dogwood Park, 30 E. Broad St., with Heart and Soul, a band that plays hit songs from the 1970s and 1980s, as well as today’s country hits. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy a free concert under the stars. Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike

What happens when middle aged siblings Vanya and Sonia, who bicker and complain in the home they share, are visited by their movie star sister, Masha, and her new boyfriend, Spike? Find out in the Cookeville Performing Arts Center’s Backstage Series production of Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike on Aug. 16, 17, 20, 22, 23 and 24 at 7:30 p.m. and Aug. 18 at 3 p.m. at 10 E. Have you seen the Cookeville History Museum’s “I Spy Cookeville” exhibit? If not, you are in for a treat. If so, come again and see what else you can find. A new Leisure Services School of Dance season is starting, and registration is open. Classes, which are available for ages 3 through adult in the classical disciplines of ballet, jazz and modern dance, are held at Cane Creek Recreation Center, 180 C C Camp Road, and conclude in May with recitals at Cookeville Performing Arts Center. Cane Creek Park boats

Weekday rentals of Cane Creek Park’s boats have ceased for the season, but they are still available on weekends through Oct. 27 at the park’s concession stand, 201 C C Camp Road. Hours are Saturday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m., and Sunday, 1-7 p.m. Paddleboats are $4 per half hour; single kayaks, $6 per hour; tandem kayaks, $8 per hour; and canoes, $8 per hour. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult and wear a life jacket, which is provided.

Bryan Symphony Orchestra

Experience a free Bryan Symphony Orchestra concert under the stars Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. at Dogwood Park, 30 E. Broad St. BSO concerts are a collaborative effort between the Bryan Symphony Orchestra Association and Tennessee Tech University’s Department of Music and Art.  Bring a lawn chair or blanket.
