Registration Open for Watermelon Crawl Virtual 5K

Watermelon Crawl virtual 5K registration open

COOKEVILLE – Run at your own time, location and pace in the Watermelon Crawl virtual 5K.

The race, presented by Cookeville Leisure Services, may be completed on or before National Watermelon Day, Aug. 3. The registration deadline is July 22.

“With the social distancing situation we are currently in, we wanted to plan a fun event that people could do safely from any location,” Sally Herren, Leisure Services recreation programmer, said. “Participants may walk or run on a treadmill, trail or track.”

Registration may be completed at www.cookeville-tn.gov/ls (go to classes and programs) or by calling 931-526-7393. The fee is $15.

Participants are encouraged to wear a printable race bib, which is available on the Cookeville Leisure Services website. Medals will be given out Aug. 3 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. as participants report their finishing time at Cane Creek Recreation Center, 180 C C Camp Road.

Herren said it is only fitting to feature a summer fruit as the star of this summer race – especially one that is helpful for hydration.

“Fun fact: Watermelon is made up of over 90 percent water,” she said. “If you don’t like to drink water, you can always eat some watermelon. Also, my little girl loves watermelon, so she is my inspiration for this theme.”

She anticipates good participation in the Watermelon Crawl and plans to offer more 5K events in the future, all of them with different fun themes.

“I hope everyone will have a good time and participate in any way they are able to, whether it be walking or running,” she said. “The goal is to get people to exercise and, most importantly, have fun.”
