Monterey Defeats Clay County 14-7 In Overtime

The Monterey Wildcats (7-1, 4-0) earned a 14-7 overtime win over the Clay County Bulldogs (5-4, 2-2) on Saturday night in Celina.

The game, originally scheduled for Friday, was postponed due to rain. The Wildcat defense got several key stops in the fourth quarter and overtime to get the win.

Sophomore quarterback Matthew Montgomery took in a touchdown rush on the first drive of overtime to give the Wildcats the lead. The MHS defense then forced an incomplete pass on fourth-and-goal to secure the 14-7 win.

The win sets up a Region 4/1A championship game Friday night between the Wildcats and rival Gordonsville Tigers (6-3, 4-0). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday in Monterey.
