The Cookeville Cavaliers gained their first win of the season Friday night in a 42-0 shutout over Livingston Academy.

The Cavaliers outrushed the Wildcats 189-(-)30 and survived their mistakes to earn the victory.

“This is much better than a week ago,” said CHS head coach Jimmy Maynord. “We had a couple penalties tonight, I guess the worst thing we did was drop the ball on the ground a few times with some fumbles, but the kids played harder and smarter.”

Jourdyn Burris rushed for a 45-yard touchdown and Andy Crokett’s PAT made the score 7-0. Evan Whited rushed for a three-yard touchdown, advancing the score to 14-0.

Waylon Whited then caught a 25 yard pass for a touchdown in the second to make the score 21-0.

Seth Kincaid recovered a fumble and took it in for a six-yard touchdown to make the score 28-0.

Evan Whited rushed his second touchdown of the night to move the score 35-0.

Sean Cox put an exclamation point on the game when he recovered a fumble and rushed for a 73-yard touchdown to make the final 42-0.

Cavalier quarterback Mace Thomsen went 10-16 through the air for 111 yards, while rushing for 24 yards on four carries. Jourdyn Burris rushed 70 yards on five carries. Evan Whited rushed 46 yards on seven carries. Waylon Whited rushed for 25 yards on one carry.

Wildcat quarterback Brodey Coffee went 16-32 through the air for 134 yards, while rushing for 20 yards on nine carries. Lachlan Hammock rushed 22 yards on nine carries. Jaden Lawrence caught three passes for 76 yards. Will Brown caught three passes for 28 yards.

“It was a good all around ball game,” said Maynord. “A lot of people got to touch the football and make plays and that is what you expect.”

The Wildcats will play their first region game of the season  against Stone Memorial at 7 p.m. next Friday at Tucker Stadium.

The Cavaliers will host their first region game of the season against Lebanon at 7 p.m. next Friday.

“Again it was definitely an improvement from a week ago, but we still have to make that same improvement because we’re going to play a Lebanon team that may be as good or better than both teams we have played.”
