Tennessee Department of Education releases data Report Cards
PUTNAM COUNTY, TENN.- Putnam County School System (PCSS) has something to celebrate as their data “report card” has been released by the Tennessee Department of Education and their overall district rank was 33 out of 146 districts in the state of Tennessee.
Putnam County schools showed achievement growth in all academic grade bands in the past year. The school district’s overall accountability GPA was 2.4 on a 4.0 scale, which is up from 2.0 in 2019. Their achievement average GPA was 2.66 which increased from 2.0 in 2019. Student growth rate shows how much students improve from year to year. Putnam County was rated a Level 5 this year. According to the Tennessee Department of Education, schools are rated as Level 1 through Level 5 to show how much students have grown, with Level 5 indicating the most growth. The grade letter average was a B and there were no targeted schools in the district.
“This past school year was anything but normal in education as we navigated COVID-19 and still are. We are pleased with the 2020-2021 outcomes measured by the state, as we saw overall improvements in academic achievement and growth,” said Corby King, Director of Schools for Putnam County. “We celebrate this news, and our teachers and school leaders should be proud. Our district also recognizes that there is always room for improvement. Learning loss took place in schools throughout Tennessee because of the pandemic and our schools saw those effects as well. However, we are committed to closing those gaps in our district for Putnam County students. Our educators are passionate and committed to providing excellent, high-quality education to all students by providing support and opportunities to reach and exceed the levels of achievement that will enable them to succeed beyond high school. These outcomes are proof of that commitment and we are grateful for their hard work this past year.”

There is more good news in store as Capshaw Elementary and Parkview Elementary were designated as Reward Schools, which means their school achieved a 3.1 GPA or higher. According to the Education Department, Reward status is the top distinction a school can earn in Tennessee. Reward schools are those that are improving overall student academic achievement and student growth for all students and for certain student groups, and they are identified annually.
“What a wonderful achievement for the teachers and staff at Capshaw and Parkview Elementary,” said Dr.Diana Wood, PreK-4th grade Instructional Supervisor for PCSS. “We could not be more proud of them and their dedication to student achievement and growth. Putnam County has wonderful schools that continue to work year after year to improve education for our students in Putnam County.”
Capshaw has earned Reward School status five times, and this will be their sixth designation.
“Capshaw’s teachers are the reason they continue to earn Reward status,” said Capshaw Elementary Principal Renee Cantrell. “They rise to the challenge and are bought into academic excellence for every student, every day. We are so thrilled to be named a Reward School once again.”
Passion, determination and dedication to student success is what Parkview Elementary Principal Bobby Winningham attributes to earning 2021 Reward status for the first time. “I love this school and the teachers, staff and students,” said Winningham. “We are over the moon that we have been named a Reward School. I am so proud of our teachers and school administration.”
