The DeKalb County Lady Tigers won in thrilling fashion Wednesday against Gallatin 57-56.
The Lady Tigers played a back-and-forth physical matchup against Gallatin. Gallatin outscored the Lady Tigers 30-25, in the first half but DeKalb battled and outscored them 32-26 in the second. DeKalb County sophomore Ella VanVranken sealed the win with a buzzer beater at the end of the game.
“Our kids just kept competing,” said DCHS head coach Danny Fish. “We always talk about just keep playing and hopefully you will find a way to be there in it at the end and make a shot to win it. Ella VanVranken did not play very good today, but at the same time we talked to her during a couple timeouts to keep plugging away and she did. She found a way to knock that shot down.”
Scoring for the Lady Tigers, senior Kadee Ferrell led with 28 points, sophomore Ella VanVranken had 9 points, freshmen Dare Collins and Avery Agee each had 7 points, junior Madison Martin had 4 points and sophomore Ella Hendrixson had 2 points.
The Lady Tigers are set to take on Pearl Cohn at 3 p.m. on Thursday on the last day of the Watertown Christmas Shootout.
“The physicality is what I liked today,” said Fish. “We got a little flustered but at the same time we weren’t scared of it. Earlier in the year when we played physical teams like White County, Knox Catholic, and Warren County, we shied away from that contact. Now we are getting to the point where I feel like we’re standing up to that contact and now we got to learn how to keep our composure when they hit back. Really proud of our kids, it is a good win for us against a good team.”
