Freshman Kailey Plumlee struck out 20 batters in Wednesday’s nightcap game against Dresden, saving the Tigerettes’ season for the second time in one day.

Plumlee’s phenomenal start allowed the Tigerettes some time to figure out Dresden’s starter, and in the third inning they finally struck with five runs in the frame.

This was highlighted by back-to-back RBI doubles from Abby Brinkley and Plumlee, followed by a three-run home run from Audrey McClanahan that put the game in control for the Tigerettes.

Plumlee continued to mow down Dresden’s hitters one after another, and then she drove in the game’s final two runs with a single to right field in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Dresden’s first hit of the game came with one out in the seventh, and it was just the second ball put in play by the Lady Lions. When all was said and done, Plumlee struck out 20 of the 21 total outs and led the Tigerettes to a 7-0 victory.

“It feels really great,” Plumlee said. “It’s an honor to be one of the final teams left in the state…earlier this morning, we didn’t have a bats going, but they got going in this game.”

The Tigerettes will now take on Jo Byrns, scheduled for Thursday at 12 p.m., and if the first inning is anything for Plumlee like it was against Dresden, Gordonsville’s season has a good chance.

“When I got through the first inning with less than 12 pitches,” Plumlee said. “That’s when I knew I had my best stuff working.”
