The York Lady Dragons extended their historic volleyball season on Monday in Chattanooga as they earned a runner-up finish in the Region 2/A tournament.
The Dragons knocked off Meigs County 3-1 (17-25, 25-12, 25-21, 25-17) in the semifinal round of the tournament before falling to CSAS 3-0 in the championship match.
The Clarkrange Lady Buffaloes’ season came to an end in a 3-0 loss against CSAS in the semifinal round (25-14, 25-12, 25-14).
The Lady Dragons, who are playing their first volleyball season in over 40 years, dropped the opening set against Meigs County before rattling off three straight set victories to roll through their first match.
“We came out with a lot of nerves,” said York head coach Michael Green. “We battled back and played like we should those last three sets against Meigs County.”
York then fought an uphill climb against CSAS (31-3), but the smiles on the Lady Dragons’ faces throughout the match told the story, they were happy their season was continuing.
“Our goal coming into tonight was not to be region champs,” said Green. “Our goal was to beat Meigs County and go to substate. I think it’s an unbelievable accomplishment by these girls. Not only to be region champs but going to substate… it’s unbelievable.”
The Lady Dragons will travel for their substate matchup on Thursday to the Region 1/A winner. If they win, they will advance to the state tournament in Murfreesboro.
“Anything can happen,” said Green. “All you’ve got to do is win three sets out of five. These girls can do anything when their mind’s right. We’re going to have to be ready from the first serve. Hopefully we’ll be ready to go… who knows, we might get lucky and end up in the state tournament.”
