Monterey’s Bowman Signs To Play Football At Tennessee Tech

by Rusty Ellis

Monterey senior Mason Bowman signed his NLI to make his commitment to Tennessee Tech official, as he will play football for the Golden Eagles after he graduates this spring.

For Bowman, it’s a day he’s been anticipating for quite a while.

“I’m truly blessed, I’ve been praying about this day for years,” Bowman said. “I’m truly grateful that it finally came…I’m glad I can celebrate it with my coaches, family, friends and everyone here today.”

Though it was affected by Covid and the transfer portal, Bowman says he felt right at home at TTU, and ultimately decided on them based on the field he wants to go into and being close to home.

“It was fun, I enjoyed visiting all the colleges and weighing all my options,” Bowman said. “What really made me choose Tech is that I want to be a civil engineer…I can still see my family and go to my same church.”

For head coach Scott Hughes, it’s the culmination of years of work to this point for Bowman, and it’s something that he says his senior has earned.

“He’s a great young man, his work ethic is second-to-none,” Hughes said. “He’s always been a really good player, but the knowledge has grown and it’s because of his work ethic and the time he’s spent trying to learn the game and enhance his opportunities to be successful.”

And Hughes believes Tennessee Tech is a great fit for Bowman as well.

“It’s a great fit for him to be at Tech, and I just hope they’re good to him,” Hughes said. “He’s a special talent, they’re getting a guy who’s going to be the first one in and the last one out…he and other seniors were such great representatives of what we wanted our values to be, and we’re just excited for the opportunity for him to play local and we get to support him.”

As far as what he’ll miss about playing at Monterey, Bowman says he’ll miss the game day atmosphere, as well as his own bed, admittedly.

“Nothing’s (better) than your high school on a Friday night football game,” Bowman said. “Everyone in the stands, I’ll miss that…Living at home as well, I’ll miss my bed.”
