Macon County Picks Up Crucial 2-0 District Win at DeKalb; Ellie Coley Pitches Complete-Game Shutout

The Macon County Tigerettes are one step closer to a regular-season District 7-3A title following Wednesday’s crucial victory at DeKalb County, 2-0.

“I thought it was a huge win,” said Macon County head coach Jenna Russell. “Our senior pitcher, Ellie Coley, stepped up and had one of the best games I’ve seen her pitch. The bottom of our lineup did the best they’ve done all season.”

Coley went the distance for Macon County as she surrendered only 4 hits while striking out 5 in the shutout. Coley also went 1-3 with a double at the plate. Tigerette centerfielder Kayla Frye went 2-3 with a run scored.

DeKalb County pitcher Bri Murphy surrendered only 4 hits and 2 runs in 7 innings with a pair of strikeouts. At the plate, Aly Griffith and Aniston Farler each went 1-3 with a double.

After two scoreless innings to open play, Macon County did their damage in the top of the third inning as a Coley grounder and DeKalb County error allowed Frye and Katie Shockley to score, giving the Tigerettes a 2-0 lead.

“This game came down to the team that had the least errors,” Russell said. “They had some we scored on and we had zero.”

The 2 third-inning runs would be enough as Macon County held the Tigerettes scoreless to earn a 2-0 victory. DeKalb County threatened with a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh with one out before Coley shut the door with back-to-back strikeouts to seal Macon County’s 2-0 win.

Wednesday’s victory improves Macon County to 10-1 overall in District 7-3A play. The Tigerettes can lock up first place on Monday, May 1, with a victory over Livingston Academy.

Upperman currently sits in second place while DeKalb County is third overall.
