The Monterey Lady Wildcat basketball program’s all-time leading scorer made her college plans official Thursday afternoon as senior Lindsey Wright signed with Cumberland University.
“I barely slept last night because I was that excited about it,” Wright said. “Cumberland is a really good school, a Christian school and really close to my house. I’m really family-oriented, so I want to be close to my family. Once I got there, I pretty much knew that was where I wanted to go.”
Cumberland University competes in the NAIA’s Mid-South Conference and is located in Lebanon.
“We’re super proud of her,” said Monterey head coach Michelle Farley. “She’s been such a huge asset the last four years. We’re excited to see her continue this and we know she’ll continue to do good things at Cumberland University.”
Wright became Monterey girls basketball’s all-time leading scorer in early February when she scored her 1,423rd career point.
“Monterey has meant a lot to me,” Wright said. “I’m not originally from here, but I moved up here and it really became home. I want to thank all the coaches I’ve had; Matt Ferrell, my AAU coach, especially.”
“It’s hard to keep her off the floor; you have to have her out there all the time,” Farley added. “It’s going to be hard to let her go, but we know she’s going to be a good asset for that program. It’s exciting for a lot of our younger players to see that and know this is achievable as long as they set high expectations and try to do better. She’s been a good role model for that.”
With her Monterey career in the rearview mirror, Wright had simple advice for those following her.
“Just enjoy it,” she said. “Every moment is special and anyone can help Monterey. Monterey isn’t just a small town anymore; you can go here, be good and play college ball.”
