The York Dragonettes picked up their 8th straight win Wednesday afternoon as they defeated The Webb School, 54-40 behind a 30-point effort from junior point guard Reese Beaty.
“The energy was much better today,” said York head coach Michael Green. “That’s the thing about being able to trap and press; you create that energy if you’re a little dead.”
After entering halftime tied at 19, York Institute outscored Webb 25-6 in the third quarter.
“We started pressing and threw the trap on them,” said Green. “We benefitted instantly.
Beaty led York with 30 points along with 16 from sophomore Emma Cooper.
“Emma has to have that aggressiveness,” said Green. “She was crashing the boards and just making stuff happen. When she’s doing that, we’re hard to beat.”
York Institute jumped out to a 7-point lead in the first quarter as a Cooper basket in the paint gave the Dragonettes 11-4 lead after one period.
Webb battled back in the second quarter as they took a 19-17 lead late in the frame before a Beaty buzzer-beating jumpshot tied the game at 19 at the break.
The Dragonettes came out of the locker room hot as they opened the third quarter on a 12-2 run to take a 31-21 lead on a Beaty basket with 3:04 left in the third. York led 44-25 entering the fourth quarter where they closed out to win by a 54-40 margin.
York improves to 9-2 overall and will play tomorrow at 5 p.m. in the Frank’s Shootout championship against the winner of tonight’s White County/Ensworth game.
“Even if we lost today, we’re still looking at a great team,” said Green. “Both teams (White County and Ensworth) have good size. This is tournament play; you have to adjust as you go.”
