The first round of the TSSAA football playoffs is in the books as six Upper Cumberland teams have advanced to next week’s second round.
Highlighting the area slate is the rematch between Macon County and Upperman on Friday in Baxter in Class 4A. The Bees won their first matchup 35-34 in week 3 and defeated the Tigers in last season’s state quarterfinals.
York Institute is set to host Polk County in a rematch of their game two weeks ago while Clay County hosts Whitwell.
1st Round Results and 2nd Round Matchups:
Class 1A
Clay County defeats Sale Creek, 28-7. The Bulldogs will host Region 3-1A’s #2 seed Whitwell on Friday, who defeated Jo Byrns 52-14. If Clay County wins, they will host the winner of Chattanooga Prep/South Pittsburg in the Class 1A quarterfinals.
Gordonsville was defeated by Chattanooga Prep, 25-7, and Red Boiling Springs fell to South Pittsburg by a 60-0 margin.
Class 2A
York Institute defeats Hampton, 42-8. The Dragons will host Polk County next week in a rematch of their week 11 showdown that York won 18-13. If York wins, they will host the winner of Tellico Plains/Bledsoe County in the Class 2A quarterfinals.
Monterey won at Forrest, 27-14, and travels to Westmoreland for the second round. Smith County fell at Marion County, 63-0.
Class 4A
Upperman defeats Signal Mountain, 49-0, while Macon County won at Soddy Daisy, 34-0. White County defeated Red Bank 31-6. Macon County and Upperman will meet in the second round in Baxter on Friday while White County travels to Loudon. The winners of each matchup will face off in the Class 4A quarterfinals.
Stone Memorial fell at Loudon, 33-21.
Class 6A
Cookeville fell to Riverdale in the Class 6A first round, 35-14.
