Class 3A #3 White County Earns 45-33 Road Victory at #1-Ranked Upperman Behind 18 Points, 8 Boards From Gracie Clark

Tuesday’s battle between two of the top-3 ranked girls teams in Class 3A went to the road team as the #3 White County Warriorettes traveled to Baxter and defeated the #1-ranked Upperman Lady Bees in District 7-3A play, 45-33.

White County overcame a 19-5 deficit early before going on to win by 12 points.

“I thought early we didn’t play well, but you have to give credit to Upperman,” said White County head coach Michael Dodgen. “They came out ready to play, but once we settled in I thought we did well. Against Upperman, you have to play for 32 minutes because they’re such a good team and so well-coached.”

The Warriorettes were led by 18 points and 8 rebounds from junior guard Gracie Clark along with 10 points and 8 boards by forward Ava Jones.

“Gracie came in there in the third quarter and had some big buckets to start the second half,” said Dodgen. “Kyra Fox played really well defensively and took some big charges. It’s a good win for us on the road, but we’ve got to reset and be ready.”

Upperman was led by 11 points off the bench from center Ella Harrell.

The Lady Bees took control early as they jumped out to a 14-5 lead after one quarter. The advantage grew to 19-5 via a Taylor Dolente three-pointer with 6:53 remaining until halftime.

“You just have to stay with it,” said Dodgen. “We chipped away at it and got ourselves back in the ballgame. Those things are going to happen in this district.”

White County sparked a run from there as they reeled off 11 unanswered points over the rest of the quarter to pull within one possession by halftime at 19-16.

The Warriorettes caught Upperman with 4:38 remaining in the third quarter as a Clark basket gave White County a 25-24 lead. Sparta pushed their lead to two possessions at 32-28 entering the fourth quarter.

White County never relinquished their lead in the fourth quarter as a pair of Lakelyn Grasty free throws with 3:16 remaining gave the Warriorettes a 38-31 lead. White County held on from there as they outscored Upperman 13-5 in the fourth quarter to win by a 45-33 final margin.

The Warriorettes improve to 20-2 overall and are in sole possession of first place in District 7-3A at 4-0 overall. Upperman falls to 19-4 and 3-1 in district action, tied in second with Cumberland County.

Up next for White County is a home game against Livingston Academy (13-7, 1-2) while Upperman travels to Cumberland County (11-8, 3-1), both on Friday.

Sophomore Ty Cobb Drops 42 vs. White County As Upperman Remains Undefeated in District 7-3A Play

The Upperman Bees improved to 17-2 overall and 4-0 in District 7-3A play Tuesday evening as they defeated White County, 74-49.

“We had spurts where we played well on both ends,” said Upperman head coach Bobby McWilliams. “I’m proud of my guys; Sparta has a good team and is well-coached. They have a lot of good athletes, so any time you get a win against them, you’re doing something right.”

Upperman was led by 42 points and 6 rebounds from sophomore point guard Ty Cobb.

“Ty was good tonight,” said McWilliams. “These guys are good at finding him and playing off of him. We’re going to keep climbing the mountain trying to get better by the end of the year.”

Senior guard Tripp Pinion led White County with 21 points.

“Tripp is a really good player and smart,” said McWilliams. “We tried to make him work on as many looks as we could.”

The Bees led from the jump as a Bronzden Chaffin put-back near the buzzer gave Upperman a 17-8 lead after one quarter. Upperman extended their lead in the second quarter as they took a 35-19 lead into halftime.

The Baxter lead only grew in the second half as Upperman led 56-37 after three quarters before winning by a 74-49 final score.

Upperman sits alone in first place in District 7-3A while White County falls to 5th at 1-3 in league play and 7-13 overall.

Up next for Upperman is a road trip to Cumberland County (6-14, 2-2) while White County hosts Livingston Academy (12-9, 2-2) on Friday.
