Raylee Werner, Emma Cooper Lead York Dragonettes To 56-46 Win At Smith County

The York Institute Dragonettes (14-5, 3-0) kept their perfect start to District 5-2A play alive Friday night as they won at Smith County (15-6, 2-2), 56-46.

The Dragonettes went 28-39 from the free throw line in the victory.

“I don’t know how many actual field goals we attempted tonight,” said York head coach Michael Green. “Raylee Werner had three fouls in the first quarter, and when you’ve already had your main point guard out (Reese Beaty) all season, we had to overcome a lot of adversity and I’m proud of the girls.”

York was led by 19 points from Werner, 12 points from Emma Cooper and 11 by Emma Pile while Smith County was led by 18 points from Karly Ramsey.

A back-and-forth first quarter saw Smith County take a 16-12 advantage after one period. York battled through foul trouble in the second quarter and retook a 22-18 lead at halftime.

“We tried to manage it as best as we can,” said Green. “We played more zone that game than we have all year. We were having to play zone because of the foul trouble, so we weren’t as good defensively. It’s hard to build a good lead if you can’t create turnovers.”

The Dragonettes opened the second half on a 9-1 run as a Cali Franklin and-one gave York an 31-19 lead with 5:29 remaining in the third quarter. York maintained their lead as they led 37-28 entering the fourth quarter.

York led by double digits midway through the fourth quarter before the Lady Owls stormed back within 5 points (46-41) via a Ramsey three-pointer with 2:33 remaining. York withstood the Smith County run as they pushed their lead back out to double digits to win by a 56-46 final score.

“Any team in the district can beat us, and tonight we had to overcome a lot,” said Green. “We’ve been hearing ‘Reese is all we’ve got’ but I know what we have. We’ve got a lot of really good players.”

Up next for the Dragonettes is Monterey (1-14) in district action on Monday while Smith County is scheduled to host Clarkrange (16-6).

Cooper Williams, Gage Gibbs Score 19 Points Each To Lead Smith County Over York

The Smith County Owls cruised to a 72-42 victory over York Institute on Friday to improve to 9-12 overall and 3-1 in District 5-2A play.

“I think we played fine,” said Smith County head coach Layne Bussell. “We got in a lot of foul trouble early and had to adjust. We went to a matchup zone and it gave them some problems. We shot the ball extremely well.”

Cooper Williams and Gage Gibbs led the Owls with 19 points each. Morgan Sinclair tacked on 9 points followed by Tyler Jones with 8.

“Gage Gibbs and Morgan Sinclair are great shooters,” said Bussell. “Tyler Jones added some threes and that’s one of our strengths.”

A back-and-forth first quarter saw a late JD Bristol three-pointer pull York Institute within one possession at 21-18 entering the second.

Smith County took over from there as the Owls extended their lead to double digits (32-22) via a Sinclair three-pointer with 4:05 remaining in the second quarter. The Owls weren’t done there as they led 42-27 at halftime.

The third quarter mirrored the second as Smith County pushed ahead by 20 points to end the quarter with a 56-36 lead before cruising through the fourth to win by a 72-42 final score.

Up next for Smith County is a home game against Clarkrange on Monday while York Institute is set to host Monterey in district action.

“Clarkrange is a young team like us, but they’ve improved a ton since we saw them,” said Bussell. “It’s going to be a tough week for us and we’ve got to be prepared for that.”
