GIRLS’ DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP NIGHT: White County, York Institute, Pickett County Earn District Titles

Three Upper Cumberland girls teams completed their undefeated runs through their respective districts Monday evening as White County, York Institute and Pickett County each won their district championship game.

 

White County (District 7-3A)

Defense was the name of the game for the Class 3A #1-ranked White County Warriorettes Monday in Crossville as they defeated #3-ranked Upperman, 32-26, in the District 7-3A championship. Ava Jones led White County with 11 points in the victory while Warriorette point guard Lakelyn Grasty was named tournament MVP. Monday’s district championship is the second straight for White County.

Pickett County (District 7-1A)

The Class 1A defending state champion Pickett County Lady Bobcats earned their second consecutive District 7-1A championship as they defeated Clay County by a 78-60 margin. Lady Bobcat point guard Zoey Nicholas was named District 7-1A tournament MVP following her 29-point performance in the championship game.

York Institute (District 5-2A)

York Institute won their fourth consecutive District 5-2A tournament championship Monday night as they ran away with a 54-19 victory over Smith County at Monterey High School. District tournament MVP Reese Beaty poured in 28 points to lead the Dragonettes, who are looking for their fourth straight trip to the Class 2A state tournament.

Cookeville (District 7-4A Runners-Up)

The Cookeville Lady Cavaliers fell in the District 7-4A tournament to host-school Lebanon, 45-44. The Blue Devils sank a single free throw with 1.7 seconds remaining for the win. Cookeville will host the first round of the Region 4-4A tournament on Friday against the winner of Oakland and Riverdale.
