After more than three hours of rain delays, the District 7-3A baseball tournament continued Friday night with a pair of elimination games that saw the Cumberland County Jets and White County Warriors extend their seasons via wins over DeKalb County and Livingston Academy.
Cumberland County 4 DeKalb County 2
The Cumberland County Jets kept their district championship and region tournament hopes alive Friday night in Baxter as they defeated DeKalb County in an elimination game, 4-2.
Senior pitcher Eli Ostrander went the distance for the Jets as he struck out 7 batters, walked 1 and surrendered 6 hits in the win. Ostrander helped himself at the plate as he went 2-3 with 2 runs scored.
The Jets got on the board early in the bottom of the first inning as a Titus Ostrander grounder scored Eli Ostrander, giving Cumberland County a 1-0 lead.
Ryder Myers extended the Jets’ lead in the bottom of the second as he delivered a two-run double to left, scoring Jake Christopher and Eli Glup.
DeKalb County responded in the top of the fourth as a Luke Johnson grounder followed by a Kollin Young single scored Ty Webb and Evan Prichard, pulling the Tigers within a run at 3-2.
The Jets tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth as an Isaiah Shelton double scored Eli Ostrander to extend Cumberland County’s lead to 4-2.
Both defenses went to work over the final three innings as neither team found home, securing Cumberland County’s 4-2 victory.
The Jets are scheduled to face White County on Sunday afternoon in Baxter approximately 30 minutes after the Stone Memorial/Upperman game that starts at 1 p.m.
White County 12 Livingston Academy 1
The White County Warriors bounced back from a loss on Thursday with a run-rule victory on Friday as they defeated Livingston Academy in 5 innings, 12-1.
Warrior pitcher Trenton Wilson struck out 3 batters while surrendering 4 hits and 0 walks in the 5-inning victory.
The Warriors tallied 13 hits including two hits each from Gage Walker, Eli Smith, Kason Seal, Kolt Norris and Matthew Wilson. Smith drove in three runs while Seal drove in two via two triples.
White County wasted no time taking control as they scored 5 runs in the bottom of the first inning. A two-run double by Smith kicked off the inning followed by a bases-clearing triple from Seal and Wildcat error to score three runs, giving Sparta a 5-0 lead.
A Mason Poston double in the top of the second scored Ethan Westmoreland to get Livingston on the board trailing 5-1. White County answered with a run in the bottom of the frame via a two-out single by Smith to score Austin Pionke, extending White County’s lead to 6-1.
The Warriors scored three runs each in the bottom of the third and fourth innings to take a 12-1 lead and win via run rule in the fifth.
Up next for White County is an elimination game against Cumberland County on Sunday afternoon in Baxter approximately 30 minutes after the Stone Memorial/Upperman game that starts at 1 p.m.
