Van Buren Sweeps Cumberland County Volleyball

By Michael Lindsay

Monday’s trip to Crossville was fruitful for the Van Buren County volleyball as they swept Cumberland County, 2-0.

“We were playing well the whole game, and our energy was really up,” said Van Buren’s Greta Rigsby. “That was the main thing that helped us.”

Prior to Monday’s contest, Cumberland County honored seniors Sydney Huling and Megan Malecha.

In the first set, Van Buren jumped out to a quick 12-6 lead over the Lady Jets and held off a late CCHS rally to win, 25-22.

In the second set, Van Buren again jumped in front of Cumberland County, this time at 15-8.

The Lady Jets didn’t go away quietly, however, as they stormed back to take a 23-19 lead over Van Buren late in the second.

The Eaglettes remained poised and tied the Lady Jets at 24 each, due in part to an ace from Layla Bouldin and two kills by Rigsby.

From there, Rigsby and Bailey Shockley closed the game out for Van Buren County to win by a final score of 27-25, completing the 2-0 sweep of Cumberland County.

“It was a close game at the end,” Rigsby said. “Me and Bailey were both on the front row, and we both knew we needed to do our best to pull the game out.”

Up next, Cumberland County is scheduled to travel to Upperman Thursday for a District 8AA matchup against the Bees.

Van Buren County faces Marion County on Tuesday, who they defeated earlier in the season.

“If we play like we did tonight, we can pull that one out,” Rigsby said. “But everybody needs to dial in like they did tonight.”
