Re: Fire on 4Th Ave South

At 6:13 pm on December 29th The Baxter Fire department received a call of a house fire at 136 Fourth Avenue South in Baxter. Crews arrived on scene within minute after the call and found smoke coming from the second floor of the house. The fire had spread through the attic. Firefighters deployed attack hose lines and started an aggressive interior attack. The blaze was brought under control by firefighters with moderate damage in the attic space. The second floor of the home sustained smoke and water damage. Chief White praises the efforts of these firefighter to save this home.

The fire is under investigation, but preliminary investigation are that the fire was cause from electrical wiring in the attic space. A special thanks to Putnam County Fire Department responded also to assist with the fire. Sixteen firefighters and several fire engines, from both departments, were on scene for over 2 hours. Firefighters had to endure the cold weather and freezing water during the fire. No one was injured during the fire. The occupants will be displaced from the resident. There is an estimated $15,000 in damage to the structure.

Chief Matt White encourage all citizens to practice home fire safety. Be sure to install working smoke alarms on every level of the home, in each bedroom, and near all sleeping areas. It also includes two ways out of every room, usually a door and a window, with a clear path to an outside meeting place (like a tree, light pole, or mailbox) that’s a safe distance from the home. Develop a home escape plan and practice fire drills regularly. Check and maintain home heating appliances such as the furnace, fireplace and space heater. Reminder that free smoke alarms are available to be installed while supplies last from most local fire departments.
