Cookeville, TN—Putnam County Habitat for Humanity celebrates 20 years of Cooking on the Square while showcasing new additions to make this anniversary year the best yet.
Fall is in the air and preparation has begun for the 20th annual Cooking on the Square! Presented by Progressive Savings bank, Cooking on the Square is an opportunity for you to support PCHFH while enjoying delicious gumbo, jambalaya and other Cajun themed soups and stews.
Mark your calendars for October 28th, from 11 am – 1:30 pm on the courthouse square. There are lots of changes this year, beginning with a new entrance at Jefferson Ave and Freeze Street. The enormous popularity of this signature event has made it necessary for Habitat to enlarge the area for Cook Teams and Bake Teams.
Yes! You read that right! This year, in addition to the wonderful sweets provided by area businesses, churches and civic groups, Cooking on the Square will have a NEW area just for Bake Teams. Called “Sweet Street” and sponsored by Wesley Bray, Attorney at Law, this area will feature 10 Bake Teams providing yummy baked goods such as cupcakes, brownies, cookies and other yummy treats. Plus, Senator Charlotte Burk’s famous Banana Pudding will also make an appearance this year.
“We are hoping to add some great new experiences to our much loved Cooking on the Square” said Casey Overstreet, co-chair of Cooking on the Square. “We want to honor the last 20 years of wonderful food and fellowship while coming together as a community to build a Habitat home for a deserving family.”
The much coveted Gumbo YaYa award for the best decorated booth will be sponsored by Gaw-Bernhardt and Associates this year. Judges from Gaw-Bernhardt will tour the event and choose the winner from among all the Cook Teams who will take home the wonderfully tacky award to display.
Of course, we couldn’t forget our Sweet Street bakers, who will have a chance to vie for the King Cake Award, sponsored by Cigi’s. Winning the very first King Cake Award, created especially for Sweet Street by Cigi, will start a sweet tradition for the new Bake Teams.
Another exciting addition to Cooking on the Square is the very first VIP Tent. Local businesses or individuals will have the opportunity to purchase a table for eight for themselves and their VIP guests to enjoy their delicious gumbo. Currently only 1 of the 5 tables are available so if you’d like to support Habitat by purchasing a VIP table for you and your friends, contact Melissa Parks at 931-528- 1711 ext 7.
