“Escape the Cookeville History Museum” Opens Soon

‘Escape the Cookeville History Museum’ opens May 20

A new Cookeville History Museum exhibit challenges kids to simply “escape.” “The end game is to unlock the museum to escape,” Beth Thompson, Cookeville museums manager, said. “Clues will lead you to the key.” An opening reception will be held May 20 from 1-3 p.m. Admission is free. No preparation is necessary.

“We will provide everything participants need to solve these clues,” Thompson said. “There may be a little detective work, but it’s all within the confines of the museum.” The exhibit features two different routes – one for ages 5-8, who can take an adult along to help them solve the clues, and another for ages 9-12 that is more challenging. One clue leads to the next as participants search for the key that opens a combination lock that contains a secret message. Exhibit specialist Pam Philpot said, “Of course, there will be some local history, but we’re also focusing on ‘What is a museum?’ and ‘What are the jobs in a museum?’” It’s an opportunity for kids to put their problem-solving skills to the test and learn through play. “We’re excited about it,” Thompson said. “It’s going to be really fun.” The exhibit continues through July 15.

The Cookeville History Museum, which is maintained by the City of Cookeville Department of Leisure Services, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at 40 E. Broad St. For more information, call 931-520-5455 or visit www.cookeville-tn.gov/ls.
