June’s History Hike a ‘Family Fun Frolic’

COOKEVILLEHistory Hikes were already fun, not to mention educational. But this Saturday’s “hike” between the Cookeville History Museum and Cookeville Depot will be even more so.

It’ll be a Family Fun Frolic.

“We want to get people outside,” Beth Thompson, Cookeville museums manager, said of the free activity that is offered the second Saturday of each month April through August and again in October between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Participants may begin their hike at either museum. Each has a different entry form, which is due back by 3:30 p.m. to be included in a prize drawing.

At the depot, participants will explore the grounds while answering trivia questions.

At the history museum, they’ll try to “escape” the new children’s exhibit, “Escape the Cookeville History Museum,” in which one clue leads to the next as they search for the key. It’s an opportunity for kids to put their problem-solving skills to the test and learn through play.

Both museums will also have family-friendly outdoor games, including checkers, cornhole, ring toss, sidewalk chalk, bubbles, lawn darts, tic-tac-toe and hopscotch. Cookies and lemonade will be served.

“This is the third year we’ve offered the Family Fun Frolic, and it’s been a success,” Ashley McKee, museums education specialist, said. “It’s free family fun, and we invite everyone to come check it out.”

Participants are encouraged to walk the short distance between the museums on Broad Street to enjoy all the activities and submit their entry forms. This month’s winners will receive a Foglight Foodhouse gift certificate.

History Hikes are offered by the City of Cookeville Department of Leisure Services’ historical arts division.
