White County Football Preparing For Macon County

The White County Warriors have played good football during their four-game winning streak, but are preparing for a test when they will travel to Lafayette to take on the Macon County Tigers on Friday night.

The Warriors (5-3) are looking to build off their 28-7 win over Clay County, but know the Tigers (6-2, 2-1) present a challenge.

“They do the little things right,” said WCHS head coach Mark Frasier. “They’re a very well-coached team. I love their physicality and the way they play hard. Defensively, they run to the football. They very easily could be 8-0.”

The Tigers largely run a wing-T offense, but have shown a willingness to try and spread defenses out in the passing game.

“It depends on the game,” said Frasier. “You’ll catch some games where they throw it out of the wing-T formations, but then they’ll line up four-wide and try to throw it around some too. They’re not afraid to throw it.”

The White County defense has been strong during the four-game winning streak, but the Tigers stunned the Warriors 48-13 in 2019. Frasier said he hopes his team is prepared for another physical matchup.

“We’ve tried to get them excited. We took a thumping from this bunch last year,” said Frasier. “It was just a game where we came out flat and those guys were ready to play. We’ve harped on that. If they’re not ready to play, they’ll get boat raced again. I feel like we’ll be ready for the challenge.”

Offensively, the Warriors have been led by freshman quarterback Owen Adams. Adams has made plays in the absence of original-starter Malaki Dowell, and other players have stepped up as the WCHS offense has scored over 34 points per game in the past three weeks. Frasier said Adams needs to continue to improve as they face stiff competition, but he has been open to coaching.

“He’s got to continue to improve,” said Frasier. “I’ve said all along that I think Owen has the potential to be a good football player. He’s got to continue to get better on his reads… sometimes he still wants to go off-script. When you’re in junior pro you can run around and do what you want to do and it works out. He takes that well. You can drill sergeant him all day long and he’s going to respond.”

Kickoff between the Warriors and the Tigers is set for 7 p.m. Friday in Lafayette.
