4-H Members Recognized for Accomplishments in State Events

4-H Members Compete in State Events

By: Melissa Henry, 4-H Agent

Being named a state winner is often the highlight of a 4-H member’s career. Every year 4-H members from across work hard to select their project area and complete their project portfolios. The 4-H Project Portfolio is a record of their project work and participation in 4-H activities related to their main project area, leadership, and citizenship. The 4-H’er also includes their resume and photos that showcase their project work. Project portfolios are completed online. Four Putnam County 4-H members submitted portfolios for judging this year and all were named state finalists and advanced to the final judging stage. Kayla Mick was a finalist in the Clothing Project, Bailey Steger was a finalist in the Horse Project, Grant Mainord was a finalist in the Engineering and Safety Project, and Riley Glascock was a finalist in the Beef Project. Kayla Mick was named the state winner in the Clothing Project and earns a $500 college scholarship. Grant Mainord was elected Central Region All Star Chief and will preside over region events during 2021.

Senior High 4-H members also competed in the state public speaking contest. Members give a 3-7 minute prepared speech about their 4-H experiences and then give a 2 minute extemporaneous speech based on a topic drawn the day of the contest. Britta Gaetjens competed in the 9th grade division and Bailey Steger competed in the 10th grade division. Each earned their spot in the state contest by being one of the region winners earlier this year. Britta placed 1st in extemporaneous, 2nd in prepared, and 2nd overall. Bailey placed 2nd in extemporaneous, 4th in prepared, and 4th place overall. Congratulations to all of these 4-H’ers on their hard work and achievement.
