The Pickett County Lady Bobcats are set to open the 2021-2022 season while looking to develop young talent.

The Lady Bobcats return one player with experience, leading to an up-and-down preparation.

“With young kids … you never know what to expect,” said PCHS head coach Brent Smith. “You’re going to get some good days and some bad days. We’ve had some up-and-down days so far.”

Sophomore Allie Amonett leads a class of sophomores and freshmen who are learning how to win at the varsity level. She is joined by Emmie Lowe, Callie Reader and Kaylee Tompkins.

“The future is bright,” said Smith. “We’re not focused on the future; we’re worried about the day-to-day activities right now and just trying to get better every day.”

Smith said the biggest key for him as a coach with a young squad is to be patient.

“That’s the biggest problem, is patience,” said Smith. “We’ve got to overlook some things and if you see improvement each day that’s the blessing behind it. Sometimes you can get ahead of yourself and expect more than what’s possible. As coaches it’s hard but it’s something you’ve got to reach for.”

The Lady Bobcats play in District 7/1A along with Red Boiling Springs, Clay County,  Clarkrange, and Gordonsville.

“I know Clay’s picked to win, but I think if you finish in the top four you could maybe win the district tournament,” said Smith. “Don’t ever count out Clarkrange, of course. Red Boiling’s a team to be reckoned with. In my eyes, I think it’s wide open. It comes down to who develops the quickest.”

Smith said the expectations for his team this year is to get better every day.

“Each day just get better,” said Smith. “Hopefully you can see each day when you walk out of the gym you made strides to get better.”

The Lady Bobcats will open the season Tuesday when they host Oneida.
