Sparta’s Burchett Signs To Play Softball At Culver-Stockton

by Rusty Ellis

White County senior Ryleigh Burchett signed her NLI on Monday morning to play softball at Culver-Stockton College after graduation.

For Burchett, it’s the realization of a goal she’s had for awhile, making for an exciting day.

“When I started this sport, I knew pretty early on that I wanted to make it to the collegiate level,” Burchett said. “I’m just thankful for the ability and the people that pushed me along the way, so I’m stoked for the future.”

The process of choosing Culver-Stockton was an easy one for Burchett, as she said she felt like it was great place to home.

“The coach was really nice and inviting,” Burchett said. “I wanted a place that would feel like a second home and I’d be comfortable…you always want to make sure you’re comfortable and that it’s a good fit for you.”

WCHS head coach Jerry Roberts says it’s a rewarding day for anyone to sign at the next level, and that Burchett has put in the work for this chance.

“Lesson after lesson, practice after practice, she’s been dedicated to this,” Roberts said. “Her dedication, her want and hard work, she’s worked so hard for this opportunity…that’s what it takes to make it to the next level.”

As far as the fit, Roberts says having a current teammate in Savannah Barr at Culver-Stockton will help Burchett adjust quickly to the environment.

“They’re going to the same place, so I’m hoping they’ll mesh really well,” Roberts said. “Having a friend there always helps a lot with the adjustment process.”

Burchett says she’ll miss the people of Sparta, but that she’s also looking forward to meeting new people.

“I got lucky that it’s a small-town area so I get to keep that similar feel,” Burchett said. “I’ll get to meet new people because it’s pretty far away, but I’m definitely going to miss playing with the girls here and the people of Sparta.”
