SUMMER PRACTICE REPORT: Cumberland County Football Enters 2023 Summer With High Hopes

By Michael Lindsay

After a 3-week hiatus, the Cumberland County Jets are back on the football practice field for the start of summer workouts.

“We’re working 8-12 three days per week in our June routine,” said Jet head coach Noah Repasky. “We gave them 3 weeks off after spring practice, so we’re trying to dust some cobwebs off and get back in shape. We separated our young guys out, and they’re learning some some offensive stuff about spacing and route combinations. We varsity loose to do some 7-on-7 and work on that.”

Returning under center for Cumberland County is rising sophomore Noah Potter, who started for the Jets as a freshman at quarterback in 2022.

“Noah has come a long way as a quarterback,” Repasky said. “We put him in a tough spot as a freshman, and he’s had a great spring. He’s taken ownership of the offense.”

Potter will have a mix of new and returning weapons on the Jet offense in 2023.

“Adam Packett was a first-year player for us last year, and he’s going to be a big-play threat for us at receiver,” Repasky added. “Jeffrey Smith is a senior who’s been waiting his turn to play. He got hurt last year or he would’ve been a starter last year. Our offense may look a little different than it did last year.”

Also returning for the Jets is first-team all-region selection Clay Mullen, who lines up at tight end and fullback for CCHS.

After going 6-5 in 2021 for their first winning record in 19 years, the Jets went 2-8 in 2022 with wins over Livingston Academy and Jackson County.

“We’re ready to get that bad taste out of our mouths from last year,” Repasky said. “This group is hungry and they’ve shown that with their work effort in the offseason. I’m looking for some competition and effort.”

Cumberland County has two 7-on-7 passing scrimmages scheduled for June before entering the TSSAA dead period at the end of the month.

“We’re going to Upperman next Thursday (June 15) and Monterey June 20,” Repasky said. “After dead period, we’re at Upperman and Tech for a few days.

“June is all about getting back in shape and getting our passing game going,” he added. “After dead period, we go to acclimation week then do some real football stuff after that.”
