Stone Memorial Splits Friday Games at York Institute, Sweeps Lenoir City Saturday; Cade Capps Drops 38 vs. Dragons

The Stone Memorial Panthers and Lady Panthers picked up a pair of victories Saturday afternoon as they swept two games at Lenoir City. The Lady Panthers won 56-35 while the Stone boys won 81-51 behind a combined 54 points from Brady Lane and Cade Capps. The victories follow their Friday night showdowns at York Institute where the Dragonettes won 56-41 and Panthers won 59-56.

Friday vs. York Institute

The York Dragonettes completed their season sweep of the Stone Memorial Lady Panthers Friday evening as they won 56-41 in Jamestown.

York was without Clemson commit point guard Reese Beaty in the victory as point guard Raylee Werner led the Dragonettes with 18 points, followed by 16 from Cali Franklin. Stone Memorial was led by 14 points from Kortney Headrick and 10 by Adison Howard.

The Dragonettes came out hot Friday as they led 21-13 after one quarter. Stone Memorial settled in during the second period to trim York’s lead to four points as the Dragonettes held a 31-27 lead at halftime.

York Institute took control on both ends to start the second half as they outscored Stone Memorial 17-5 in the third quarter to lead 44-32 entering the fourth, where they closed out to win by a 56-41 final score.

The boys game came down to the wire as Cade Capps poured in 38 points to lead the Panthers to a 59-56 victory. Capps went 14-15 from the free-throw line along with 4 three-pointers. York Institute was led by 23 points from Heath Wattenbarger and 17 by Bryson Bilbrey.

Stone Memorial led 14-10 after one quarter and 31-24 at halftime. Capps had 21 points at the break.

York Institute battled back to trim Stone’s lead to a single possession by the end of the third quarter as the Panthers took a 47-45 lead into the final frame.

Stone Memorial held off York as they went 8-10 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to win 59-56.

Saturday vs. Lenoir City

Saturday’s contests at Lenoir City were all Stone Memorial as the Lady Panthers won 56-35 while the boys won 81-51.

15 points from forward Kailee Waldo led Stone Memorial while Kortney Headrick tacked on 13 in the victory.

Stone Memorial controlled the first half as they led 15-7 after one quarter and 27-13 at halftime before winning by a 21-point margin. SMHS improves to 2-4 with the victory.

In the boys game, Stone Memorial picked ups. 30-point victory as they defeated Lenoir City 81-51.

Cade Capps poured in 28 points along with 26 from senior forward Brady Lane as the Panthers improved to 6-1 overall this season.

Up next for Stone Memorial is a home contest against Clarkrange on Tuesday.
