The Cookeville Cavaliers battled back from a five-run deficit on Tuesday night, but fell just short in a 6-4 loss to district foe Green Hill.
Cookeville starter Aiden Linder pitched around some trouble early and kept the game scoreless until the fifth inning, as the Hawks broke through for five runs against him in the frame.
The Cavaliers finally broke through in the sixth inning, as Ty Gantt started the comeback effort with a two-run double. Cookeville scored two more runs on a ground-out to cut the led down to just one run at 5-4, but Green Hill tacked on another run in the seventh to give themselves some breathing room.
CHS put their leadoff man on in the bottom of the seventh, but a double-play instantly wiped him out and put the Cavaliers behind the eight-ball with two quick outs. Cookeville got another single with two outs and brought the tying run to the plate, but a flyout to left field ended the game in 6-4 fashion for the Hawks.
The loss runs Cookeville’s record to 3-9 overall on the season.
The two teams will face off again on Wednesday at Green Hill.
