Both the Smith County Owls and Gordonsville Tigers are fighting their way out of their respective elimination brackets of the TSSAA state baseball tournament following Wednesday’s games.
Smith County fell to Huntingdon in game one on Tuesday afternoon but staved off elimination Wednesday morning as they defeated Sweetwater in a Class 2A elimination game, 9-8.
The Owls’ win came via a walk-off single by Max Long with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to score Morgan Sinclair and keep Smith County’s state tournament run alive.
Following their 2-1 victory over McKenzie on Tuesday night, Gordonsville fell to University School of Johnson City Wednesday afternoon in the Class 1A tournament, 5-4.
The Tigers held a 3-1 lead entering the third inning before the Bucs scored a run in the bottom of the third and three runs in the the fifth to take a 5-3 lead entering the seventh.
Gordonsville’s Edward Rivera delivered a 2-out double to score Tristan Wood in the top of the seventh before the Bucs recorded the final out to win 5-4.
Both teams are set to compete in their respective tournament elimination brackets Wednesday night at 7 p.m. weather permitting. Smith County is set to face Riverside at Stewarts Creek High School while Gordonsville is scheduled to face McKenzie at Rockvale.
