Owen Adams Named UCR And Nelson Trophy And Screen Printing Freshman Of The Year

Owen Adams did not anticipate ending the season as the White County Warriors’ starting quarterback, but when he found himself in the role, he capitalized on it.

Adams’ strong freshman season earned himself the UCR and Nelson Trophy and Screen Printing Freshman of the Year award.

“It feels pretty good (to be recognized),” said Adams. “I learned a lot from Malaki Dowell, as he went out. It’s been a good year.”

After star WCHS quarterback Dowell’s season ended with a knee injury in the fifth game of the season, Adams took over as the starter and led his team to a 3-1 record in their final four games.

Adams’ first start was a 41-21 win at Cannon County. He said he learned a lot in that game to take with him the rest of the season.

“The Cannon County game was my first start. I learned a lot from that,” said Adams. “I was really nervous going into that.”

He emerged as a dual-threat quarterback who can run the ball as well as throw it.

“(My biggest strength) I think right now is running, said Adams. “And next year I think it’s going to be throwing. I’m going to work on that.”

Adams said he thinks the experience he garnered in 2020 will be valuable moving forward.

“I think it will be valuable,” said Adams. “Seeing how I can play and how to perform during intense games will be good.”

Adams said he thinks he and Dowell can have success for the Warriors in 2021 together along with their receiving core.

“I think we can do some damage. We will have most of our receivers back. Our receiving core is going to be really good next year.”
