High School Football Recap – Week 9

Monterey 13 – Oneida 20

The Monterey Wildcats dropped their first region contest of the season on the road on a rainy night in Oneida.

The Indians (6-2, 3-1) raced out to an early 14-0 lead, scoring on a long pass and capitalizing on a MHS turnover. The Wildcats’ (5-3, 2-1) defense then slowed the OHS offense for the majority of the game, but the offense struggled to sustain drives.

The Wildcats got within one possession on a touchdown rush by Mason Bowman, but the Indians regained a double-digit lead with a long touchdown rush. Chandler Bowden caught a touchdown pass from Matthew Montgomery late in the fourth quarter, but the Indians recovered the onside kick to secure the victory.

The loss takes the Wildcats out of control of first place in Region 2/2A. Now, there is a three-way tie between Monterey, Rockwood and Oneida. The Indians have the advantage in the tiebreakers as currently constructed, but have not secured first place.

The Wildcats will return to action Friday when they travel to take on Bledsoe County.
